The Shade Tree Clinic (STC) was founded by Vanderbilt University School of Medicine students in 2005 to: 1) care for East Nashville’s underserved population and 2) educate compassionate future healthcare professionals. To meet this dual mission, STC forms interdisciplinary teams of medical, nursing, pharmacy, and law students who are supervised by professionals in these fields to provide healthcare and social services free-of-charge to this underserved community. STC provides care free-of-charge to over 360 patients who are otherwise unable to access adequate healthcare. The funds requested in the application will support laboratory testing supplies, medication for cardiovascular, pulmonary, metabolic, hepatic, and mental illnesses, supplies to manage chronic disease, compensation for an accredited social worker, educational seminars, resources and supplies to aid the social work program.  4 of 5 (80%) patients with hepatitis C will test negative and be fully cured of hepatitis C within the next year. 327 of 364 (90%) patients will be given a comprehensive social work annual exam within the next year to identify financial, housing, and nutritional needs.
